Image Analysis Unit

Our aim

The Image Analysis Unit aims to provide collaboration, resources, expertise, and breakthrough technologies regarding image analysis to scientists using any imaging technologies for their research in the north-east and beyond.

Who we are

The Image Analysis Unit was established to address the unmet needs of researchers within the north-east and beyond. It provides expertise, training, and guidance on image processing, analysis, and data visualisation.

Through our diverse team of scientists from varying backgrounds, we provide support to scientists to truly enhance their image processing and analysis procedures, enabling greater understanding of their data.

Given the increasing complexity required for high-reputation journal acceptances and the prevalence of machine learning and deep learning in the natural sciences, the Image Analysis Unit collaborates on projects from all disciplines, and offers a structured, reliable approach to enhance research quality and impact..

Our services

We provide direct one-to-one training in image processing/analysis techniques and software, and can provide access to high-end analysis servers with image processing software’s applicable to the full range of possible modalities

TRLs supported

Funding requirement

Collaboration: For any collaborative project, funding must be available to pay on either an hourly basis or for a percentage of a staff member’s time.

Training: As training needs are diverse, charges are based on the time needed for direct one-to-one training sessions. Alternatively, lower-cost group sessions for more general skills are also available

Evidence requirements

As an analytical service, the only requirement is an image, with initial consultations for advice being free of any charge

Our customers

Hexagon supported

Basic research

From photography to super resolution microscopy, any imaging technology is supported by our team, with experience in diverse themes from arts/heritage to structural engineering, to cellular microscopy, to preclinical imaging.

Prototype development

With experience in 3D design and printing, we can assist with the design of outreach/teaching 3D printable models, alongside conversion of 3D imaging data into tactile printable objects.

Value Proposition

Our software and hardware access allows us to work easily across a variety of imaging modalities, and we have direct experience working with ultrasound images, CT scans, and MRI scans to provide custom analysis pipelines for quantitative analyses.

Pre-clinical Evidence generation

Through our experience and software access, we make the most of often limited datasets, enhancing understanding of complex systems through image processing and analysis.
