NIHR HealthTech Research Centre (HRC) in Diagnostic and Technology Evaluation

Our aim

To support the development and evaluation of new and better diagnostic technologies, so health conditions and treatments are identified as quickly as possible

Who we are

We are a team of experts who specialise in clinical research methodology. We help companies and other innovators to evaluate their technologies in an effective way, so their innovations reach the UK market and benefit patients, the public and the health and care system. We work in collaboration with innovators to guide them through the portfolio of evidence that needs to be generated.

Our highly skilled, collaborative team use innovative methodological approaches to demonstrate whether technologies are clinically useful and cost effective.

Our independent expertise includes:

  • Identifying opportunities for technologies to have a greater impact on patient health by analysing care pathways
  • Verifying the performance of the technology through designing and analysing clinical evaluation studies
  • Examining the financial value of the technology by conducting health economic studies
  • Advice and support with patient and public involvement to ensure that health technologies are suitable for everyone and informed by all our lived experiences

We are one of 14 HRCs across England and part of the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR). We are hosted by Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in partnership with Newcastle University.

TRLs supported

3 to 7 and where proof of concept data has been generated.

Funding requirement

If you plan to submit a grant application, we can support you and be a part of that application either as a co-applicant, collaborator or sub-contractor. We can also be funded through a commercial contract.

Evidence requirements

Our customers

Our customers are mainly UK Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs), as per our remit from the NIHR. However, we also provide support to multinational companies and charities along with academic and clinical researchers. We are not limited to UK collaborations, but some UK funding competitions are restricted to UK based applicants.

Hexagon supported

Basic research

The NIHR HRC can conduct systematic literature reviews to support basic research.

Unmet needs

The NIHR HRC have expertise in finding the unmet needs in a disease area and developing a list of the ideal characteristics for new diagnostics that could help to tackle these challenges. Find out more here.

Intended purpose

The NIHR HRC have expertise in early stakeholder engagement. From this work we generate a list of potential “use cases” for the new diagnostic and a list of changes to clinical decision-making if the test was used.

Market analysis & business planning

The NIHR HRC can provide funding opportunity support to support business cases.

Develop target product profile

The NIHR HRC help to develop ‘blueprints’ of the ideal minimal and optimal characteristics for new diagnostics that could help to tackle the unmet needs in that system as determined by patients and healthcare professionals. This is known as a “Target Product Profile”. This document helps developers to shape the design of their diagnostics at an early stage and indicates the preferences of healthcare professionals working in that space

Value proposition

The NIHR HRC have expertise in care pathway analysis to identify scenarios where a new diagnostic could have the best benefit on patient care. We use this technique to help developers identify and assess the value proposition of their new diagnostic.

Health economics

The NIHR HRC have expertise in generating health economics evidence on new diagnostics including early economic modelling, cost-effectiveness analysis and budget impact analysis

Clinical evidence generation

The NIHR HRC offer statistical expertise. They can help with the design, set-up and analysis of clinical studies that evaluate the accuracy and utility of new diagnostics.
